The ASGBI represents all specialities in general surgery. A major aspect of general surgery, common to all surgical practice, is the management of the unselected emergency take. It is well recognised that this aspect of the job is responsible for many of the significant negative events in early consultant practice. Emergency General Surgery (EGS) and improvement in the involved processes for both patients and practitioners is a major part of the strategy of the ASGBI. There is increasing evidence that the associated volume of litigation, complaints, morbidity and mortality contributes significantly to the stresses and thus burnout experienced in a surgical career. The detrimental effect of the pandemic on trainees at all stages will only worsen this phenomenon due to a relative lack of clinical experience on appointment.
To address this need, the ASGBI would like to provide a support network to provide mentorship, education, training and friendship to newly appointed Consultants to improve EGS services; the ASGBI Early Career Consultant Network (ECCN).
Like all ASGBI activities, the ECCN will be delivered in consideration of the ASGBI’s Equality, Diversity & Inclusivity (EDI) statement which can be viewed HERE.
ASGBI members who are in the first five years of a Consultant appointment and Senior Trainees (ST8 and Post-CCT), are automatically enrolled into the ECCN and eligible to join activities and events organised under the umbrella of the ECCN.
